Apache Superset is an open-source BI platform that pairs very well with analytical engines like ClickHouse. It can deliver enterprise-grade dashboards without per-user licensing, provided it is set up with care.
Build on curated datasets
Point Superset at gold-layer tables or views. Define reusable metrics in the dataset so every chart uses the same calculation.
Govern access with roles
- Create roles per function or site, such as Procurement or Plant Managers.
- Grant dataset and dashboard access by role.
- Use row-level security filters for site or region restrictions.
Make dashboards feel consistent
Superset's flexibility can lead to inconsistent visuals. A small design system helps. Reusable HTML/CSS KPI cards, a shared colour palette and standard layouts make dashboards look like one product.
Measure adoption
Superset records user activity in its metadata database. A usage & access analytics dashboard built from that metadata shows which dashboards are used, by whom and how often. That is invaluable for prioritizing work and retiring unused content.
Advanced visuals
The deck.gl integration supports geospatial views such as territory choropleths. They are useful for supply chain, distribution and sales coverage analysis.
When Superset is a good fit
- An open-source stack is preferred, or licensing costs are a constraint
- The data already lives in a SQL-speaking analytical engine
- The team is comfortable owning configuration and upgrades
