Governance often sounds like bureaucracy. In BI it comes down to two practical guarantees: the right people see the right data, and the data is right.
Access: RLS and RBAC
- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) decides which dashboards and datasets a user can open.
- Row-Level Security (RLS) decides which rows they see inside them, for example only their branch, region or plant.
Drive both from maintained mapping tables, not one-off settings, so access scales to hundreds of users and can be reviewed.
Quality: validate before you publish
- Row-count and total reconciliation between layers
- Uniqueness and not-null checks on keys
- Accepted-value checks on statuses and categories
- Comparison against authoritative source reports
Automated checks catch discrepancies before decision-makers do. On large statistical programmes this has eliminated hundreds of recurring discrepancies a year.
Transparency: monitor usage
Usage and access analytics show who uses what. That helps you prioritize enhancements, retire stale content and confirm that access matches policy.
Documentation
A business glossary, KPI definitions and data lineage make analytics auditable, and they make onboarding new team members much faster.
